Saints Under Construction - The Fluitts

Marc and Carolyn Fluitt joined Mary, Queen of Peace a little over a month ago, but it already feels like home – just the right place to be a “saint under construction.”

Marc, in particular, has found a unique path to holiness at MQP. 

A retired business executive, he showed up in the parish office one day offering to help out in any way needed. “I was drawn to contacting the MQP parish office to see what I might do as another pair of hands to support their administrative work.” In fact, he offered to sharpen pencils, but the Holy Spirit had other things in mind. “I was given an assignment to help maintain the candle stands. This has been a great joy for me. I embrace St Therese’s “Little Way” of doing little things with great love, so I get to pray while I am scraping wax off the stands!”

In addition to keeping our four candle stands tidy, Marc has other ways of serving the Lord. For instance, he has a pen pal in prison. “We write one another about the morality that our Catholic faith stands for,” Marc said. “He hasn’t disclosed that he is baptized or a Christian in another faith tradition yet. I journey with him and answer his questions. It’s a real surprise to me what a small gesture of writing a letter means to him.”

Everyone should have a saint to guide them along the path to holiness. For Marc, he says: “My favorite saint is Saint Augustine. His story of his conversion from being a sinner to a Doctor of the Church is amazing.”

With St. Augustine as his guide, Marc can concentrate on his main task (aside from cleaning up the candle stands): “I am working to make Jesus and my faith the total center of my life.”
