What is CGS?

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd was developed in Rome, Italy, in 1954 by Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi. Inspired by the work and insights of Maria Montessori, it offers a comprehensive approach to the faith formation of children while recognizing their profound spiritual capacity.

The program is rooted in the conviction that God and the child share a relationship that can be both deep and beautiful. Although a four-year-old may not yet be a theologian, he or she can grow in holiness and communion with the Triune God, as demonstrated in the lives of young saints such as St. Dominic Savio and St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Children have a deep need to encounter God and a unique ability to recognize and delight in His presence. The role of the adult is to accompany the child and help nurture this personal encounter with God.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is firmly grounded in the teachings and Tradition of the Catholic Church. Through Sacred Scripture and the richness of the Liturgy, children are invited to discover the Good News and develop a lasting love and reverence for God.
